Unleashing Creativity: The AI Revolution in Art
Published on: March 10, 2024
The 'Aberrant Creativity' exhibition, a collaboration between the Institute for Applied Creativity at Texas A&M and the Arts Council of the Brazos Valley, is currently showcasing a unique collection of artworks that explore the relationship between AI and human artistic expression. Running through Dec. 21, with an opening reception on Dec. 7, this event presents a platform for artists to respond to the rapid advancements in AI-generated art.
The exhibition, attracting global submissions, selected 28 pieces from 225 entries. It features works by renowned AI artists Lev Manovich, Steve DiPaola, and Eunsu Kang, alongside a piece by Texas A&M student Claire Thessen. The artworks range from digital prints and time-based sound/video works to interactive virtual pieces, all incorporating AI in the creative process.
One of the event's highlights includes 'Wish It Into the Wheat Fields' by Steve DiPaola, symbolizing the exhibition's aim to explore the blurred lines between human and machine creativity. According to Dr. Jinsil Hwaryoung Seo, the exhibition delves into challenging AI in creative partnerships and interpreting its role in unconventional ways.
Submissions required originality in collaboration with AI, spanning various mediums like virtual reality, 360 videos, and 3D digital works. Five judges will award prizes in categories such as aesthetics, innovation, and best student work, with the best in show receiving $500.
The exhibition received entries from 12 states and countries like the UK, Canada, Taiwan, and China, with a majority from professional artists. Interactive and multidimensional pieces, such as a 3D printed object projection and a vintage slide projector combined with AI, showcase the creative fusion of old and new technologies.
Emily Bujnoch's piece '/chimera' exemplifies the event's theme by merging mythological design with AI-generated digital imagery. The exhibition's goal, as stated by Seo, is to inspire artists and students to embrace AI in their creative endeavors, pushing the boundaries of traditional art forms.
'Aberrant Creativity' not only demonstrates the evolving landscape of art in the age of AI but also serves as a testament to the limitless potential of human-machine collaboration in artistic creation. The exhibition, open until Dec. 21, will also have a virtual twin hosted online in 2024.
