Game-Changing AI Stop-Arm Cameras Enhance School Bus Safety in Buffalo
Published on: March 10, 2024
In an effort to enhance student safety, the City of Buffalo and Buffalo Public Schools have partnered with 'Bus Patrol America' to implement a new safety measure on school buses. This initiative involves the installation of artificial intelligence (AI) powered stop-arm cameras on hundreds of school buses throughout Buffalo.
The innovative AI cameras, named 'Ava', are designed to intelligently monitor and scan up to eight lanes of traffic, detecting vehicles that unlawfully pass school buses when stop lights are flashing and arms are extended. This technology aims to hold drivers accountable and prevent dangerous situations for students boarding or alighting from buses.
Steve Randazzo, Chief Growth Officer at Bus Patrol America, explains that the installation of these AI cameras on every bus will be followed by training for city officials on using the software effectively. This high-tech approach is expected to significantly improve compliance with traffic laws around school buses, enhancing student safety.
Parents and school bus drivers have expressed strong support for this initiative. Takara Owens, a parent of three children attending Buffalo schools, appreciates the added safety the cameras will bring. School bus driver Tierra Watson-Page, with nearly 16 years of experience, is excited about the advanced cameras aiding in their job and enhancing safety.
Bus Patrol America anticipates the complete installation of the AI cameras to be operational in a few months, marking a significant step in leveraging technology for public safety. This project is part of a broader strategy to utilize emerging AI and generative AI technologies in the education sector and across cities nationwide.
