Artificial intelligence (AI) may be a hot topic, but its adoption in the business world remains limited. According to the most recent Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS) conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, only 3.8% of businesses reported using AI to produce goods and services.
The Information sector, which includes industries like software production and data processing, reported higher AI usage than other sectors, with 13.8% of businesses in this sector currently utilizing AI. The BTOS, providing bi-weekly insights into AI usage among businesses, also highlights the variations in AI adoption across different economic sectors.
AI is defined in the BTOS questionnaire as computer systems and software capable of performing tasks that normally require human intelligence. This includes a range of technologies like machine learning, natural language processing, predictive analytics, and more.
While AI seems ubiquitous, the BTOS findings suggest otherwise, with only an estimated 3.9% of businesses using AI to produce goods or services as of early November 2023. The usage, however, varies widely among sectors, with sectors like Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services also reporting significant AI adoption.
Conversely, sectors such as Accommodation and Food Services have lower levels of AI adoption. Looking forward, 6.5% of businesses nationally plan to use AI in the next six months, indicating a growing interest in the technology across various sectors.
The 2019 Annual Business Survey (ABS) corroborates these findings, showing similar AI adoption rates and sectoral trends. The BTOS will continue to monitor AI use among businesses, with upcoming surveys aimed at providing deeper insights into the specific types of AI being used and its impact on employment and business organization.
