EU Implements Stricter Regulations on Artificial Intelligence - Stay Informed!

Published on: March 10, 2024

In a significant move to regulate artificial intelligence (AI), European Union lawmakers have reached an agreement on one of the world's first comprehensive AI laws. The AI Act, a pioneering piece of legislation, aims to promote AI development while safeguarding against its potential risks.

This landmark legislation categorically bans AI practices that pose a clear threat to people's safety, livelihoods, and rights, addressing the increasing concerns about AI's disruptive capabilities. It establishes a framework that identifies and regulates AI applications based on their risk levels.

Roberta Metsola, the president of the European Parliament, described the AI Act as 'a balanced and human-centered approach.' She emphasized its potential to set a global standard for AI regulation in the coming years.

The legislation, first proposed in 2021, classifies AI applications by risk. The highest-risk uses, including systems that exploit vulnerable groups, certain law enforcement biometric identification systems, and AI deploying manipulative techniques, are outright banned under the new law.

AI systems with limited risk, such as chatbots including OpenAI's ChatGPT, or technology generating images, audio, or video content, will now face new transparency requirements. These obligations aim to ensure clear understanding and responsible use of such technologies.

Thierry Breton, the EU Commissioner for Internal Market, expressed optimism about the AI Act's impact, stating on social media that it is 'more than a rulebook – it’s a launchpad for EU startups and researchers to lead the global AI race.'

The introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022 marked a turning point in AI's mainstream adoption, sparking a surge in generative AI technology and highlighting its potential across various sectors.

AI's disruptive influence extends beyond the tech industry, affecting education, the arts, and media. The rapid evolution of AI has brought not only technological advancements but also controversies and challenges, as evident in the experiences of companies like OpenAI.

The AI Act represents a significant milestone in AI governance, addressing both the opportunities and challenges of AI, and setting a precedent for future legislation globally.
