In a year marked by macroeconomic challenges, venture capital investments witnessed a downturn overall. However, the generative AI space, and AI startups broadly, bucked this trend, experiencing robust funding. According to data from PitchBook, AI-related startups garnered over $68.7 billion in 2023, with a significant contribution from generative AI companies like OpenAI, Stability AI, and Anthropic.
While the AI sector seems to be closing the year on a high note, a recent PitchBook report on Q3 investments suggests that 'mega-deals' might be skewing the overall funding figures. These large-scale investments, often running into hundreds of millions, have disproportionately inflated the total investment numbers in the AI domain.
For instance, significant investments such as Amazon's commitment of up to $4 billion to Anthropic and Microsoft's $10 billion investment in OpenAI (partly in cloud compute credits) exemplify these mega-deals. Similarly, Inflection AI's $1.3 billion funding round, led by Microsoft, highlights the trend of large tech firms heavily investing in generative AI startups.
When these large transactions are accounted for, the total VC funding in AI for Q3 stands at approximately $22.1 billion. However, removing these mega-deals from the equation brings the figure closer to $15.1 billion, indicating that the sector's growth might not be as expansive as top-level numbers suggest.
The trend of mega-deals in the AI sector raises questions about the true state of health and diversity in AI startup funding. While the big numbers are impressive, they may not accurately represent the broader investment landscape for AI startups, especially for smaller and emerging players in the field.
