Karin Kimbrough, chief economist at LinkedIn, noted a significant increase in conversations about AI on the platform, including a spike in terms related to 'ChatGPT', 'prompt engineering', and 'generative artificial intelligence'. LinkedIn data shows a 60% increase in mentions of generative AI between January and September this year.
The role of 'prompt engineer', a position that didn't exist prior to the rise of generative AI, is becoming increasingly sought after. These professionals specialize in crafting queries and content for AI systems to enhance their performance. According to Adzuna, job openings for prompt engineers are expected to grow as companies seek to leverage generative AI technologies.
Adzuna's data from the UK shows a notable increase in job listings for prompt engineers, AI ethics officers, chief AI officers, AI auditors, AI trainers, and machine managers. Machine learning engineers, already in demand before the AI surge, have also seen a rise in average salaries.
In the US, the demand for skills in 'generative AI' and 'machine learning' is evident, with thousands of job listings highlighting these requirements. Importantly, not all of these roles necessitate a background in technology, opening up opportunities for a broader range of candidates.
