Published on: March 10, 2024

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., is advocating for a fair distribution of wealth and opportunities created by artificial intelligence, aiming to give workers greater control over AI deployment. In an interview with FedScoop, Khanna expressed his desire to see a more inclusive approach to AI technology within both the federal government and the private sector.

Khanna's focus is on ensuring economic opportunities for workers affected by AI advancements. He seeks to mitigate the potentially disruptive impact of AI technologies and ensure that workers share in the wealth generated. His approach involves creating legislation to give workers a voice in AI adoption in their workplaces.

The Silicon Valley Democrat proposed ideas such as mandatory representation of workers on the boards of AI companies and the inclusion of labor representatives in government technology committees. These measures aim to involve workers in decision-making processes regarding AI implementation.

Khanna, representing a significant portion of Silicon Valley, also expressed concerns about economic disparities resulting from AI. He advocated for redistributing the wealth and resources generated by AI from Silicon Valley to other regions, to bridge the gap between the affluent and the working and middle classes.

Another priority for Khanna is improving government technology services. He plans to bring federal tech leaders to testify before Congress to ensure accountability for delays in upgrading critical government websites and services.

While acknowledging the challenges in passing a comprehensive AI regulation bill, Khanna outlined the key areas such legislation should focus on. These include safety, prioritizing human decision-making over machines, economic equity, and combating deep fakes and misinformation.
