Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Google co-founder Larry Page, once close friends, found themselves at odds over the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI). This deep-seated disagreement came to a head during Musk's 44th birthday celebration in 2015, where the conversation spiraled into a heated debate. The New York Times reports that at this gathering in Napa Valley, Page accused Musk of being a 'specieist', favoring humans over potential digital life forms.
The dispute, as witnessed by several attendees, revolved around two contrasting visions of AI. Page envisioned a 'digital utopia' where humans and intelligent machines would coexist and evolve, while Musk feared a dystopian future where AI could eliminate humanity. This argument was not their first clash over AI's implications, marking a significant fracture in their decade-long friendship.
Walter Isaacson, Musk's biographer, shed further light on their disagreements, dating a similar confrontation back to 2013. Isaacson recounts Musk's passionate defense of humanity in his dialogue with Page, highlighting Musk's deep concerns about AI's unchecked development.
The tension extended beyond personal discussions. Page, as CEO of Google, oversaw the acquisition of AI lab DeepMind in 2014 for over $500 million. Prior to this deal, Musk had personally appealed to DeepMind's founder, Demis Hassabis, urging him not to sell to Google. Musk's apprehension about AI being controlled by a single entity like Google was evident in his plea.
In response to his growing concerns, Musk co-founded OpenAI, initially as a nonprofit, aiming to develop AI in a way that benefits humanity. His involvement with OpenAI, however, ended in 2018 after a failed takeover bid. Musk has since initiated his own venture, xAI, focusing on AI to 'understand the true nature of the universe.'
OpenAI itself has not been free from internal discord over AI's potential risks. These tensions played a role in the brief ousting of co-founder Sam Altman, illustrating the complex and often contentious nature of the debate surrounding AI's future.
