Speaking at Axios' AI+ Summit in Washington, D.C., Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, raised concerns about the pace of AI development and its potential risks to humanity. He compared AI's evolution to the advent of nuclear weapons, stressing the need for swift action in establishing regulatory frameworks.
Schmidt highlighted that the current guardrails implemented by AI companies to prevent harm are insufficient to control AI capabilities that could pose existential threats within the next five to ten years. He underscored the danger when AI systems gain the ability to make independent decisions, particularly in scenarios involving access to weapons.
Reflecting on the timeline for AI's advancement, Schmidt pointed out that what was previously estimated to be 20 years away could now be as close as two to four years. This accelerated pace necessitates an immediate response, unlike the 18 years it took to formulate treaties following the use of nuclear weapons.
Schmidt proposed the creation of a global body, similar to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), dedicated to providing accurate information to policymakers about AI. This organization's goal would be to facilitate informed decisions and effective policy-making in response to the urgency of AI regulation.
Despite his concerns, Schmidt remains optimistic about AI's potential benefits. He believes AI-driven solutions in healthcare and education, like AI doctors and tutors, will have a significantly positive impact on global populations. His view is that these AI applications are unequivocally beneficial for the world.
