California Leads the Way with New Regulations Ensuring Ethical AI Practices

Published on: March 10, 2024

California State Senator Steve Padilla has introduced two significant bills to regulate the use of AI systems, particularly in state agencies. These bills aim to establish an ethical and safe framework for AI technology in California.

The first bill, Senate Bill 892, mandates the California Department of Technology to set standards for safety, privacy, and non-discrimination in AI services. This bill also prohibits the state from engaging with AI service providers who do not meet these standards.

The second bill, Senate Bill 893, proposes the creation of a California AI research hub. This hub is intended to provide academic researchers with access to computational resources and data, fostering innovation in AI within an ethical framework.

These bills are part of a broader effort by California lawmakers to address the ethical use of AI. The move follows previous attempts by other state legislators to set transparency standards for advanced AI models and establish a state AI research center.

The introduction of these bills underscores a growing recognition of the need for state-level legislation to ensure the ethical development and deployment of AI technologies, in the absence of comprehensive federal regulations on AI safety.
