Spore.Bio, a French startup, is leading this revolution with its pathogen detection device. This device employs optical light to scan surfaces in food processing facilities, identifying harmful microbes by comparing them with a database of common factory floor microbes. This AI-driven approach offers a much faster alternative to traditional lab tests.
While standard factory testing can take 5-20 days, Spore.Bio claims its solution provides near real-time results. This efficiency has garnered significant attention, leading to €8 million in pre-seed funding. The round was led by London-based venture capital firm LocalGlobe VC, with contributions from EmergingTech Ventures, No Label Ventures, Famille C (Clarins Family Office), Better Angle, Plug&Play Ventures, Entrepreneur First, Kima Ventures, Raise Sherpas, Fair Equity Sharpstone Capital, and several angel investors.
Founded in 2023 by CEO Amine Raji (formerly of Nestlé), CTO Maxime Mistretta, and COO Mohamed Tazi (former Gymlib founder), Spore.Bio is positioned to significantly impact the food safety industry. Despite the promising start, the journey ahead is not without challenges.
Spore.Bio faces competition from US-based PathogenDX, which has already raised $11.6 million for its range of pathogen detection solutions. This competitive landscape underscores the growing interest and necessity for innovative solutions in food safety monitoring.
