These individuals report feeling unsupported institutionally and being isolated from other operational teams. This situation leads to a culture where ethical AI practices are not deeply embedded into the company ethos, often taking a backseat to other business priorities.
The findings also reveal that those advocating for ethical AI face indifference or even hostility, especially from product managers. These managers often view ethical considerations as obstacles to productivity and progress, creating an environment where advocating for AI ethics is seen as a risk to the company's immediate objectives. This attitude poses a significant challenge to integrating ethical AI practices into the core development process.
The report refrains from naming specific companies but highlights a broader industry issue. The rapid development of AI technologies, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, has brought ethical concerns to the forefront, including issues related to data privacy, bias, and copyright infringement.
