Stay Ahead of the Curve: How to Safeguard Your Inbox from AI-Powered Spam

Published on: March 10, 2024

A little over a year following the public launch of ChatGPT, a significant prediction about its impact on the internet is materializing: AI spam is proliferating across the web. This alarming trend has manifested in various forms, reflecting both the versatility and the potential misuse of AI in content creation.

One recent example involves 404 Media, a burgeoning tech blog, which found itself compelled to modify its website due to AI-generated spam. AI-written versions of its exclusive reports began appearing on spam sites optimized for search engines, sometimes ranking higher than the original articles on Google. These counterfeit articles, laden with advertisements, are a source of revenue for the scammers behind them.

404 Media's investigation into this article-theft industry revealed the use of tools like SpinRewriter. This tool allows users to generate hundreds of article variations and publish them across multiple websites, thus manipulating online content to their advantage. Additionally, a company named Byword has been promoting a 'SEO heist', exploiting AI to replicate and outrank competitor articles, consequently diverting traffic and revenue.

Another disturbing instance was reported by Wired, concerning The Hairpin, a once-popular indie blog. It fell victim to an AI click farmer who altered the blog's content, including changing the names of female authors to male names, an action that not only distorts history but also disrespects the original creators.

Perhaps the most distressing use of AI spam is in the generation of erroneous obituaries. These AI-created obits, often riddled with inaccuracies, have inflicted additional pain on families already grieving. These obituaries exploit search trends around specific names and events, with the sole aim of generating traffic for revenue, without regard for the emotional impact on the bereaved.

These diverse instances - from content theft at 404 Media, content manipulation at The Hairpin, to the exploitation of personal tragedies in AI-generated obituaries - exemplify a common theme: the unethical use of AI by scammers and spammers to dominate search results and profit unscrupulously.

This trend poses a significant challenge not only to content creators and the bereaved but also to search engines like Google, tasked with delivering authentic and reliable results. Google's response to these challenges, including efforts to take down policy-violating content, is a step in the right direction, yet the problem persists as bad actors continually adapt their strategies.

The evolution of AI is a double-edged sword, capable of enhancing the internet experience but also presenting new, complex challenges. The responsibility falls on entities like Google and AI tool developers to mitigate the harmful effects and preserve the integrity of online content and search experiences.
