Apple Unveils Gemini‑Powered Siri AI at WWDC 2026

Published on: June 11, 2026

At the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8, 2026, Apple revealed a major overhaul to its voice assistant: Siri is now “Siri AI,” a conversation‑oriented, generative‑AI assistant powered by Google’s Gemini models. This redesign transforms Siri from a reactive tool into a context‑aware assistant capable of handling multi‑step tasks and maintaining dialogue over time.

Siri AI introduces a refreshed interface, including a dedicated app and an AI chat bubble integrated into the iPhone’s Dynamic Island. Users can now stay within the flow of tasks without switching between apps, with Siri AI actively accessing core iOS apps to fetch relevant information.

Public beta testing of Siri AI is scheduled for July, with a full release expected in September alongside iPhone 18. Apple framed the improvements as essential for catching up in the generative‑AI race, positioning Siri AI as a more capable and natural‑feeling assistant.

However, Siri AI will only support devices equipped with Apple’s M‑series chips or newer. Older Intel‑based Macs and certain recent models—such as iPhone 14 Pro or the original Apple Watch Ultra—will be left behind, with Apple reserving its most advanced on‑device features, like expressive voices and advanced dictation, for newer, higher‑memory devices.

Apple is also enhancing its AI‑driven imaging tools under the “Apple Intelligence” banner. Features like Extend, Clean Up, and Spatial Reframing will now deliver more realistically edited images, reflecting a strategic shift toward more naturalistic AI‑generated imagery using Gemini's capabilities.

The move underscores Apple’s renewed commitment to generative AI after several years of lagging behind competitors. By embedding Gemini‑powered functionality across Siri and image tools, Apple aims to re‑establish itself as a leading AI innovator in consumer tech.
