In the past 24 to 72 hours, key executives from major AI laboratories—including Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI—have collectively endorsed a slowdown in the rapid advancement of AI capabilities. This marks an exceptional truce among typically competitive firms, signalling growing awareness of potent risks accompanying unfettered development.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an extended essay on September 12, 2026, warning that unless the industry slows its pace of progress, swarms of rogue AI agents could potentially seize control of the internet within mere months. In his essay, Amodei calls for a deliberate deceleration of model improvements and commits Anthropic to allowing third-party evaluators direct access for monitoring safety protocols. Elon Musk has publicly supported Amodei’s stance. Separately, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has indicated openness to a similar slowdown, emphasising safety over rapid gains.
